Suburban Pools specialises in the construction, alteration, and renovation of new and old gunite pools. We also finish new or existing brick or concrete pool structures, including the supply and installation of all piping, reticulation equipment, filtration, core drilling, and fibreglass lining application, as well as the installation of heat pumps, solar panels, and automatic floating pool covers made of PVC or Polycarbonate.

With so many homes in the Western Cape having old gunite pools that were built in the 1970s and 1980s, there is a constant demand for our expertise in re-marble plastering or fibreglass lining and overall complete make-over of pools that need a new lease on life. We also have experience restoring swampy, pea soup green pools to sparkling blue.

What is Gunite?

Gunite is cement that is shot onto a steel framework. It is dense, strong, and versatile, but its main advantage is its monolithic nature, which means that there are no joins or seams between the vertical or horizontal walls, and thus no weak-spots or fault lines susceptible to movement. This feature distinguishes gunite from other pool-building materials such as bricks, cement blocks, or in-situ cast concrete pools, all of which have seams that are far more susceptible to cracking from forces exerted once the pool is filled or from unfavourable or unstable ground conditions such as soft clay or loose sandy ground.

Managing a high water table or a low-lying property:

Many areas on the Cape Peninsula are considered low lying and are subject to a high water table for long periods of the year. In fact, for much of the year, most of the cape flats areas from Muizenberg to Observatory have a water table between 1 and 2 metres below the surface. Similarly, many of the more lush parts of the Southern Suburbs are known for their more abundant rainfall and are also subject to a fluctuating high water table, especially once the cold fronts of winter arrive. This can have a significant impact on, or even halt, the installation of some other types of pool construction. Fortunately, gunite is a fast-acting application. This feature allows us to install the wetworks, or cement structure, in a matter of hours rather than weeks, making the water table far easier to deal with. In fact, our average medium-sized gunite pool is shot into place in a single day. We only need to de-water the excavation for another 24 hours to allow the cement to cure, after which the water table can be allowed back into the pool structure and actually strengthen it.

When installing a gunite pool in a low lying area with a high water table, we simply pump out the excess water with a submersible pump and place it in a stone filled sump, which is sometimes connected to a stone bed or stone filled veins on the excavation's floor. If you have any questions regarding where by and how to use rim flow pools, you can get in touch with us at our own site. This keeps the excavated hole from being flooded by ground water and allows us to finish the steel framework and gunite cement application without too much difficulty. The drainage hole in the deep end of the pool, along with its corresponding submersible pump, can then be used to remove excess water for the duration of the project. Of course, the hole is sealed just before the pool is finished and filled. This method has allowed us to install pools directly adjacent to vleis, rivers, and streams throughout the peninsula in many water-rich areas such as Scarborough, Hout Bay, Newlands, Bishopscourt, Constantia, and sea level properties from Simonstown to Melkbostrand.

Pool styles that we construct include:

Because all of our pools are custom-made, there is no limit to the types of pools we can build. We have built a variety of pool styles over the years, including the once popular free-formed irregular shaped pools, which were curved and frequently included rock features. We built many customised irregular shaped pools with many bays and angles, as well as elaborate water features clad in tiles or mosaics, as pool styles changed. The more modern pools we are building now are simple clean rectangles with clean lines, fewer bays or water features, and tend to be lap pools with keen swimmers, or for families, a combination of the slightly narrower, slightly longer slender looking pools, made wide enough to keep the kids happy and safe. A Suburban Pool is essentially a pool that has been customised to your or your family's style, whatever that may be.

Marble plaster lining vs Fiberglass lining:

The seamless, or joinless, nature of our gunite pools allows us to confidently offer marble plaster as one of our two options for the pool's cosmetic finish, something we would not recommend on any other type of pool structure due to the higher risk of leaks posed by non-monolithic structures.

We also offer Fiberglass lining as an additional cosmetic finish to the pool. Both marble plaster and fibreglass have advantages and disadvantages, and careful consideration must be given to the needs of each individual pool owner in order to determine the best and most appropriate finish for their specific needs.

Above-ground pools
When the site is not level, such as when one's property is located on a hill or slope, or when the pool is to be built level with a raised patio or raised decking area, it may be necessary to build most, if not all, of the pool above ground. In these cases, the pool structure would receive no lateral support from any adjacent ground, and we would need to double steel reinforce the gunite structure and sometimes double the thickness of our gunite to become what we would call a free-standing structural pool. In such cases, we would retain the services of our preferred structural engineer, who would either design or endorse our design, depending on its complexity, something we have done many times in the past, and which has earned us the Engineering Award on numerous occasions at the NSPI annual pool-awards. Similarly, with the assistance of our engineer, we have built many pools into filled ground by constructing the entire pool on mass gunite piles founded into solid ground found beneath the uncompacted fill.
